What Is the Appeals Council?

The Appeals Council is a later stage in the Social Security disability appeal process. After an Administrative Law Judge decision, you may be able to ask the Appeals Council to review that decision.
What this usually means
- The Appeals Council may grant review, deny review, or issue another action
- Not every disagreement with a hearing decision automatically wins at this stage
- Deadlines to request Appeals Council review are critical
What to do next
- Read the ALJ decision and appeal rights page thoroughly
- Calendar the deadline immediately
- Identify legal or evidentiary issues worth raising
- Keep copies of everything you file
