Common SSA Notices
What Is a Social Security Termination Notice?
By Ronnie Shaw, Social Security Disability Advocate · October 7, 2026
A Social Security termination notice generally tells you that benefits are ending and why. Reasons can include medical cessation after review, work findings, or other eligibility issues. The notice should explain appeal or other response rights and the timing that applies to your case.
What this usually means
- Termination language is serious—do not set the letter aside
- Appeal windows can be short
- Supporting evidence may still be relevant depending on the reason
What to do next
- Identify the stated reason for termination
- Calendar the deadline immediately
- Collect medical or work records that relate to the reason
- Get help reviewing options before the window closes
How advocacy can help
Termination letters deserve a same-week review when possible. See benefit reviews & reinstatement and disability claims & appeals.
