How Does Social Security Decide If I Am Disabled?

Written by Ronnie Shaw · Published September 27, 2026

For most adult claims, SSA uses a multi-step sequential evaluation looking at work activity, severity of impairments, listings, past work, and other work you might still do.

Substantial gainful activity

If you are working above certain earnings levels, SSA may find you not disabled at step one.

Severity and listings

Impairments must significantly limit basic work activities; some meet or equal a listed impairment.

Past work and other work

If you cannot do past work, SSA considers age, education, and residual capacity for other work.
