How Do I Appeal a Social Security Disability Denial?

Written by Ronnie Shaw · Published September 27, 2026

Most disability denials are appealed by requesting reconsideration within the time printed on your notice, then requesting a hearing if reconsideration is also denied.

Request reconsideration

Follow the instructions on your denial letter. Keep copies of everything you file.

Submit helpful evidence

Updated medical records and clearer functional information often matter on appeal.

Hearing stage

If needed, an Administrative Law Judge hearing is a later appeal step.
