Can Social Security Send Me to Their Doctor?
Written by Ronnie Shaw · Published September 27, 2026
Yes. If your file lacks enough medical evidence, Social Security may send you to a consultative examination (CE) with a doctor they arrange.
Why SSA schedules a CE
Missing records, outdated notes, or unclear functional limits can trigger an exam.
Do I have to go?
Missing a scheduled CE without good cause can lead to a denial. Contact SSA promptly if you cannot attend.
CE is not full treatment
A consultative exam is usually limited; keep seeing your own providers.
